Welcome to House of Loave — where healing, hope, and handmade bread come together.
House of Loave was born not just from flour and water, but from resilience, love, and the need to find purpose during a time of uncertainty. After two years of job searching with no luck and navigating the aftermath of a painful divorce and mental health struggles, I turned to the kitchen for comfort.
What began as a simple distraction—learning to make pasta and artisan breads from The Preppy Kitchen—quickly became something deeper. Baking helped me reconnect with myself and begin to heal.
My very first loaf wasn’t a simple one — it was a chocolate babka. I wanted to challenge myself, to prove that I was still capable of trying new things, even in the midst of rebuilding my life. That beautiful loaf came to life in a tiny one-bedroom apartment, where the floorboards were warped, chipped, and uneven. I had to rotate pans constantly just to bake anything evenly. It was humbling, messy, and bittersweet. But in that imperfect little kitchen, I felt a spark again.
In early 2023, I started sharing my yeasted breads with family and friends, and their encouragement lit a spark I never expected. By August, I had the wild idea to start selling my creations, and in October—just two days before marrying my best friend and biggest supporter, Marty—I set up shop at my first local market. From the beginning through November 2024, I sold yeasted artisan breads while quietly working behind the scenes to master sourdough.
Sourdough was a challenge I failed at over and over again. For a long time, my loaves were dense, flat, or just plain inedible. But I kept at it, determined to grow. When sourdough finally clicked, it marked not just a new product, but a new layer of confidence. Today, House of Loave specializes in savory sourdough breads, handmade in small batches with extra care and lots of love. Whether you order online through our Hotplate shop (available Wednesdays and Sundays) or visit us at Garden Ridge Market Days every second Saturday, we want each loaf to feel like it was made just for you.
Every bite is a reminder that even after life’s hardest seasons, something beautiful can rise.
Through it all, I’ve come to embrace the powerful words of Maya Angelou. Her poem Still I Rise captures everything this bakery stands for — strength through adversity, grace in imperfection, and joy in the rising.
When we have extra loaves, we drive around downtown San Antonio sharing fresh bread and bottled water with those in need. Because love, like good bread, is best when shared.
